Mounting Your Truck Camper

If you want a compact and convenient RV, a truck camper is for you! But mounting one of these units isn’t always easy. If it’s your first time mounting the rig, you’ll need some guidance. At Terrytown RV, we’re here to help. Keep reading for some tips on mounting a truck camper, and give us a call or stop by our location in Grand Rapids, MI with any questions.

Raise the Truck Camper

Start the mounting process by raising the unit. You want it to be about four inches above the bed of your truck. Raise in small increments until you reach the right height. Focus on raising the front end of the rig first, then raise the back to level. Don’t raise the front first since this could lead the camper to flip forward. Keep lifting the unit until it’s high enough to back your truck under it.

Back Up Your Vehicle

Now it’s time to back up your vehicle under the camper. Ensure that the unit clears your truck’s wheel wells and avoid the rig’s jacks as you reverse. Take your time during this part of the mounting process. Keep things centered and practice caution.

Connect Wiring

Before fully reversing, hook up any wiring from the camper to the truck bed. It’s easier to handle this part of the mounting experience before your rig is fully installed. Once everything is hooked up, back your vehicle into place. Make sure your unit doesn’t hit your vehicle’s bumper or tail lights.

Lower the Truck Camper

Once you have the vehicle under the unit, lower the truck camper into place. Work in small increments until, lowering the back and then the front. Go slowly until the camper rests on your vehicle securely.

Secure the Unit

The final part of the mounting process is securing the truck camper. You’re going to need tie-downs and turnbuckles. Attach turnbuckles to the anchor points on the camper and the tie-downs on your vehicle and tighten them.

Keep in mind that too much tension might damage tie-downs or rip out the anchors. You can avoid this mounting problem by using a spring tension indicator or spring-loaded turnbuckles. Although it’s an extra upgrade, it’s worth it for ensuring you’re securely mounting your camper.
