Motorhomes are a fantastic one-stop shop when it comes to RV travel! As the name implies, it is essentially a home on wheels, and is convenient in the way that you don’t need a separate, large vehicle for towing. If you’re in the market for a motorhome, you may be wondering what is out there, so here are the ABCs of motorhomes . . . that is, the difference between Class A, B, and C motorhomes!
Class A Motorhomes
Chances are you have seen a Class A motorhome before. They look like big buses, and are what musicians typically use as tour buses while on the road! These big rigs sit on a large chassis, usually commercial bus or truck chassis, or a type of motor vehicle chassis, and can be anywhere from 20 to 40 or more feet in length. Out of all the classes, Class A motorhomes are known for luxury and spaciousness, which is reflected in their price tag starting at $58,000 and up, some costing millions of dollars. They typically feature premium fixtures, decorations, and appliances, many of which are residential sized (full-sized versions, like you’d find at home). The Entegra Coach Aspire is an amazing example of the ultimate luxury Class A with premium features! Some Class A motorhomes, like the Forest River Georgetown 3 Series, have the space, but are more simplistic with a nicer price tag! These rigs also tend to have multiple slide outs and large exterior storage compartments for living and storage space. The big downside to these is that the gas mileage isn’t great, typically around 6-10 miles per gallon for a gas engine, and 8-14 MPG for a diesel. However, if you are using your motorhome for full-time living (which Class As are perfect for), you won’t have to worry much about fuel economy!
Class B Motorhomes
Class B motorhomes have a more unique design compared to Class A and Class C motorhomes, as they are much smaller and more compact. They have the exterior appearance of a large van, and a snug interior space. These motorhomes are great for the couple on the go, although some models may say they can sleep more than two people. If you don’t want things to get extremely cramped, it’d be better to accommodate no more than two people. Class Bs have a lot of the same basic amenities of larger motorhomes, with a bathroom, kitchen and dining areas, and a sleeping area. However, everything is a lot more compact and smaller. A great advantage, however, is that they get great fuel economy compared to the other classes! Another appealing feature is the portability of the entire unit, as you can just shut the doors and drive away without having to pack up a lot of components, and you can park this motorhome virtually anywhere!
Class C Motorhomes
Class C motorhomes are more similar to Class A motorhomes, but are smaller and have fewer slideouts and can range anywhere from about 15 to 30 feet in length. These rigs have a recognizable extended area over the cab, which usually contains a bunk or storage area! Class Cs are more affordable and family-friendly than the other classes, but generally have around the same, or slightly better, fuel economy than Class A motorhomes. But with a price range of anywhere from around $30,000 to $140,000, it could be worth it for you! With a sleeping capacity sometimes up to 10 people, these motorhomes, like the Jayco Greyhawk series, are great for family travel! They include all of the amenities that come standard in RVs, although some brands tend to go more premium with appliances and furniture, like the Dynamax Corporation’s DX3 series. Ultimately, it is up to you to choose which motorhome is best for you. Depending on your budget, required sleeping capacity, and tastes, you will find the perfect fit for you!
